The Folded Page Book Club

A monthly gathering for readers who want to argue about books in the best possible way. We read everything from overlooked classics to new releases that deserve better than they're getting.

Currently at capacity

Our book club is full, but we maintain a waiting list. Join it β€” people move, people get busy, people discover they don't actually like discussing books with strangers.

This Month's Selection

The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida

by Shehan Karunatilaka

A raucous, irreverent, and ultimately moving tale of a photographer who wakes up dead in what seems like a celestial visa office. Think The Lovely Bones meets Slumdog Millionaire with a hefty dose of Sri Lankan politics and mythology.

Discussion: Thursday, February 6th at 6:30 pm

How Our Book Club Works

1

We Choose Together

Book selections are made democratically. Marta brings three options each month, we vote, and the majority wins. No one gets to veto a book just because they "don't like fantasy."

2

Read & Reflect

You have a month to read the book. We don't assign chapters or provide study guides β€” you're adults. Come prepared to have opinions and defend them.

3

Discuss & Debate

First Thursday of each month, 6:30 pm sharp. We meet in the back room with tea, coffee, and occasionally wine. Discussions run until 8:30 pm or until we've exhausted the topic.

Meeting Details

πŸ“…

When

First Thursday of every month at 6:30 pm. We start on time β€” if you're late, you miss the opening arguments and have to catch up.

πŸ“

Where

The back room at The Folded Page. It seats 12 people comfortably, 15 if everyone likes each other. We provide seating, lighting, and beverages.

πŸ’·

Cost

Β£5 per month, which includes a 10% discount on all purchases. Pay monthly or annually β€” we're not running a subscription empire here.

πŸ“š

What We Read

A mix of new releases and overlooked classics. Heavy on literary fiction and translation. Light on bestsellers unless they're actually good.

Recent Selections

The Employees

by Olga Ravn

A haunting work of speculative fiction about humans and humanoids working together on a space station. Half the group loved it, half found it incomprehensible. The discussion was excellent.

January 2025

The School for Good Mothers

by Jessamine Chan

A dystopian novel about state-mandated parenting classes that hit uncomfortably close to home for several members. We spent most of the evening arguing about surveillance capitalism.

December 2024

The Books of Jacob

by Olga Tokarczuk

At 900+ pages, this was our most ambitious selection. Three people finished it, two gave up halfway through, and one person read the Wikipedia summary. We discussed it anyway.

November 2024

Klara and the Sun

by Kazuo Ishiguro

Ishiguro's meditation on artificial intelligence and love. Everyone finished this one, and the discussion ran 45 minutes over time. We may have solved the problem of consciousness.

October 2024

The Vanishing Half

by Brit Bennett

A powerful novel about twin sisters who choose to live in different worlds. This led to our most heated discussion about identity, family, and the stories we tell ourselves.

September 2024

Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead

by Olga Tokarczuk

A murder mystery that's really about animal rights and human nature. Half the group saw the twist coming, the other half were genuinely surprised. All agreed it was brilliant.

What to Expect

We Will:

  • βœ“ Have strong opinions about books and defend them with evidence
  • βœ“ Listen to viewpoints that differ from our own
  • βœ“ Provide context about authors, translators, and literary movements
  • βœ“ Start and end on time
  • βœ“ Recommend other books you might like based on your reactions

We Won't:

  • βœ— Pretend to like a book just to be polite
  • βœ— Assign homework or provide study guides
  • βœ— Judge you for not finishing a book (it happens)
  • βœ— Spend the entire time talking about the film adaptation
  • βœ— Choose books based on what's trending on BookTok
